I can't access Blackboard. What should I do?

1. I can't access Blackboard. What should I do?

Cannot Access Web Site?
Make sure you are using the correct URL which is:
http://webct.georgebrown.ca
Try to access the site through the main George Brown College Web site.
Click on the Blackboard link on the left course menu.

Unable to LogIn?
Usually, your log on is firstname.lastname and your password is your 6 digit Stuview PIN.
Check you are using the correct information.
If you still can not get in, occasionally some faculty have a different log on or password. Please check with Ladan Jazayeri at 415-5000 ex 2138.

2. I don't see my course in WebCT6? Where is it?

Did you fill out the form to activate your course? All courses must now be requested.
Please go to http://liad.gbrownc.on.ca/LiadHome/crnhelp/activecrn.htm and fill out the Activate CRN request form.

3. I have filled out the form to activate my course in WebCT6, but I still don't see my course. What should I do?

Please call Ladan Jazayeri at 415-5000 ex 2138

4. I see all of my students in Grade Book but some of my students say they can't see my course. What should I do?

First have your students try to log on from a computer at the school to make sure that the problem is not specific to their home computer. Once they have checked this, have your students go to http://liad.gbrownc.on.ca/webctassist/ and fill out the form for assistance. Tell the student to fill out all of the information and submit it asap. They should receive a response within 24-48 hours.

5. Some of the functions in WebCT6 are not working for me. What's wrong?

Are you using an approved browser?

If you are a Macintosh user try Safari or Firefox.

Have you enabled pop-ups? Make sure you enable pop-ups in your browser( see http://liad.georgebrown.ca/liadhome/webct/ce6/ce6config.mht) CHILLIE, PLEASE LINK THIS TO THE DISABLE POP UP BLOCKER TITLE ON THIS WEBPAGEbut also in any other add-ons like Yahoo Toolbar or Google Toolbar.

6. Why is it that when I try to download a file in WebCT6 using Explorer, I get a blank screen?

Sometimes when you click on a link to a file, a yellow bar will appear on the web page, just underneath the address bar in your Web Browser. This bar is part of the browser security settings, and is not specific to WebCT.

To continue opening the file, take the following steps:

  1. Right click on the yellow bar.
  2. Click on the Allow Blocked Content link.
  3. A Security Warning Dialogue box will appear. Click Yes to open the file.

After doing this, you will be taken back out to the MY WebCT page. Click on your course link, and download your file when you re-enter the course.

8. Where are my students?

To find a list of your students, click the TEACH TAB, then select GRADE BOOK

9. I have found my students in the GRADE BOOK, but I only see 10 students. Where are the rest?

The default settings for lists of students, files, etc., in WebCT, is set to display only 10 items per page. To change this page preference setting, scroll down to the bottom right of the page. Click the link that resembles a group of pages.

When the new screen opens, enter the number of items you want to display at one time on the screen and save your entry.

10. How do I enter grades for my students? How do I reorder Columns in Grade Book?

If you want to enter grades for a new assignment under the TEACH tab, select GRADE BOOK. At the top of the page is an item CREATE COLUMN. Using the drop down menu, select the type of item you want to add. Select Numeric ( If it is a project that you wish to include in a calculation of a midterm or final grade.)

Next name the assessment or assignment and fill in the other items asked. Your item will now appear in the grade book as the last item to the left.

To enter individual grades for students under TEACH tab look for the column you wish to add grades to, using the drop down action menu select EDIT VALUES, now add or change individual marks. Then click SAVE

To move this item, select REORDER COLUMNS at the top. Click the box beside the column you wish to move. On the list of columns find the item you wish your column to appear before and Select the yellow arrow "Move selected items above." Click on GRADE BOOK and you will see your column has moved.

 

11. I don't give my students a Midterm grade. Why can't I delete it from the Grade Book?

The Midterm Grade column is WebCT6 default, you can't delete it but you can hide it.

To hide it under TEACH tab GRADE BOOK select REORDER COLUMNS click HIDE COLUMN beside MIDTERM.

12. How do I create a calculated column that will add up all the grades?

To create a column that adds all your grades, under the TEACH tab, select GRADE BOOK. Look for CREATE COLUMN and using the action menu select CALCULATED. Label the column, for example Final Grade, choose maximum value 100, then SAVE. go back to GRADE BOOK, look for your Final Grade column, using the action menu select EDIT COLUMN FORMULA and follow the directions.

13. How do I delete a column in Grade Book?

To delete a column in GRADE BOOK, under the TEACH tab select GRADE BOOK OPTIONS in top right hand corner, using the drop down menu select COLUMN SETTINGS. Select the BOX above the column you wish to delete, then looks below columns and find the DELETE option.

14. How do I move items on my homepage?

To move an item over one space up/down/left/right under BUILD tab using the drop down menu click MOVE with arrow of your choice.

To move one item above many others, under BUILD tab select at top right PAGE OPTIONS and drop down action menu GO TO POWER VIEW, select the box of the item you wish to move, mouse over one of the Yellow arrows to where you want the item to move. Click to choose above or below. Go back to PAGE OPTIONS and select GO TO BASIC VIEW. Your item is now moved.

15. How do I add an item to the calendar?

Under BUILD tab select CALENDAR. Click on the Date that you want to add an entry. Add the title for entry. Add a description. The title will appear on the calendar. When a student clicks on the entry the description will come up.

16. How do I delete an item in the calendar?

Under BUILD tab select CALENDAR. Click on the day of the item. Using the drop down action menu under the item select DELETE.

17. I don't want all my notes or items to appear before I cover them in class. How can I hide them until I want them to appear?

Under the BUILD tab select SELECTIVE RELEASE. A list of items on your homepage will appear. Choose SET RELEASE CRITERIA for your item . CLICK ADD DATE CRITERIA and choose when you want the item to appear, then SAVE.

18. How do I upload a file to my homepage?

Under the BUILD tab select ADD FILE. Using the drop down action menu select Browse for Files. An icon My Computer will appear. If it does not please follow the instructions at http://liad.georgebrown.ca/liadhome/webct/ce6/ce6config.mht to obtain the correct version of java.

When you see the MY COMPUTER icon, browse for your files ( up to 10 at a time) your files will now be the last items on your homepage.

19. How do I rename an item on my homepage?

Using the drop down menu of the item in question select EDIT PROPERTIES. Change the title of your item and SAVE.

21. I can access the Mail function, but I can't send mail.

Check to see that pop-ups are enabled in preferences of your browser. If they are enabled, check to see if you have a Yahoo or Google toolbar. If you do, you will need to enable pop-ups in that location. ( For more information see http://liad.georgebrown.ca/liadhome/webct/ce6/ce6config.mht.

22. How do I create an announcement for my students?

Under the BUILD tab, choose ANNOUNCEMENTS and select CREATE ANNOUNCEMENTS. Title the announcement (this will not show up in the announcement.)

Select HTML CREATOR on if you would like to change the size/font or colour. For recipients choose Select ALL ROLES. Choose your delivery dates. Select Deliver also deliver as a pop-up message if your would like it to pop up as well as appear under announcements.

23. My HTML CREATOR doesn't work, why not?

Whenever a message comes up asking you to allow java, always say yes. If your HTML CREATOR is not working you will need to follow the instructions at http://liad.georgebrown.ca/liadhome/webct/ce6/ce6config.mht to obtain the correct version of java.

24. How to I create a quiz?

To create a quiz under BUILD tab select ASSESSMENTS.

Click CREATE ASSESSMENT. Title your assessment and fill in the GRADE BOOK COLUMN NAME.

The radio button for QUIZ is selected by default. Click SAVE.

You now will see your quiz. Click the link for your quiz or using the drop down action menu select GO TO ASSESSMENT.

Now click CREATE QUESTION. Select MULTIPLE CHOICE.

Fill in the name of the question (don't use the answer to the question)

Under question text fill in your Question; for example: "When taking a WebCT test, you must save your answer after each question."

Next select the radio button ONE ANSWER.

Under Answer 1 select the radio button CORRECT RESPONSE and fill in value 100%. In the box type in "True" (or the correct response to your question)

Under Answer 2 fill in the box type "False" or a wrong answer

Scroll down. Under SETTINGS select the Radio button yes under Randomize answer ordering:

Scroll down and open up the MORE OPTIONS.

Select CREATE CATEGORY. Select a name that will help you organize your questions. For example, Chapter 1.

Then SAVE.

Your question is added to the quiz. Under Points fill in the box with the number of points per question, usually 1. Click UPDATE TOTAL.

To add an alternate question, select the radio button beside your question, then select ADD QUESTION ALTERNATES and repeat the above process.

When you have completed your quiz under BUILD select ASSESSMENTS and go to the drop down action menu for your quiz and select EDIT PROPERTIES

Under Question Delivery select the radio button DELIVER QUESTIONS ALL AT ONCE; and deselect DISPLAY QUESTION TITLES.

Decide on the duration for your quiz and how many attempts will be given. (Generally about one minute per multiple choice question and one attempt.)

Under Student Score select Release the score once the assessment has been submitted

Under MORE OPTIONS select DATES AVAILABLE and fill in your dates and select Create a corresponding event in the Calendar if you want an item to appear there

Under RESULTS SETTING choose your settings. If your students are writing a test in the proctored Computer room, select only Show the student's total score for the assessment and deselect any other items so that students will not be checking their answers while others are in the computer lab.

Under SECURITY SETTINGS fill in a password if the test is going to be done in a proctored lab. Click SAVE.

Go back to ASSESSMENTS using the drop down action menu select SHOW ITEM

Your quiz is done.
