Getting Started
A first step in getting started with course development, is to use the college resources that currently exist to assist you with this task.
Learning Innovations and Academic Development (LIAD) is a department that provides this support. The development process usually requires the involvement of a team of people with specialized skills.
Team members may include:
-
Instructional Designer - provides assistance with course design, planning, promoting course interactivity and assessments related to outcomes;
-
Digital Media Support - creates images, interactive elements, self assessments;
-
Additional Technical Support - as required.
As part of this team, you will assume the role of the subject matter expert. Although online course development can appear overwhelming at times, keep in mind that you are part of a team whose purpose is to help you create an effective course.
Much of what you already know about teaching and learning can be applied to the online environment. A primary difference relates to the lack of face to face contact. It is therefore, most essential that:
-
you provide clear instructions;
-
your course materials are well organized and clearly presented;
-
you foster a sense of community online.
Additional steps to assist you with getting started include:
-
