Discussion Groups with Large Numbers of Students

One strategy for working with large groups may be to create a single large discussion group where students can simply make comments or post questions. Encourage the students to answer each other’s questions.  Depending on the nature of the students and the course topics, this type of arrangement may or may not lead to frequent postings.
With large groups of students it is impossible to read every single posting. One way to address this problem, is to ask the students to submit their 3 best postings and support their selection in relation to criteria for good postings.

A class of 100 students can be subdivided into private discussion groups of 15-20 students who communicate mainly with each other, with you as the teacher, monitoring the discussions, and providing only occasional responses.
