Course Content Structure

As a way of helping the learner proceed throughout the course, content and activities are usually broken down into discrete units called learning modules. Usually, a course module refers to a week of work. The learner derives a sense of satisfaction through completion of short segments of work that is offered in a modularized format.

Learning Modules

The learning module in WebCT is a tool that enables a series of web pages and interactive tools to appear together in a sequence. The learning module:

  • Consists of a table of contents to which files are added; any type of file may be added such as a web page, word document, PowerPoint file, audio file, etc.
  • Provides an automatic navigation system to enable the student to move through the pages simply by clicking on the page links in the left course menu.
  • Provides for integration of interactive elements such as self-tests, discussions, external web resources.
  • Includes multi-media options, such as audio or video that can be added to address diverse learning styles or illustrate/re-enforce a concept through images, or animation.
  • Contains an HTML editor that enables faculty to create or edit web pages within the module.

A common sequencing for a learning module includes the following headings:

  • Introduction.
  • Learning Outcomes Addressed.
  • Readings and Resources.
  • Topic Pages or e-lessons.
  • Learning Tasks including Discussion Group Postings.
  • Summary.
  • Assessment/Assignment – Graded or non-graded.
