GSSC 1084, The Psychology of Human Relations

References: Falikowski, Mastering Human Relations

Players: about 40  (4 tribes)

Duration: approximately 9 weeks (Feb. 5-Apr. 2)

The Gurus

The Mystics

The Psychics

The Shamans

VALUE: 10% of course (BONUS marks available)

Objective: (1) To be the last person in a given tribe to have all eight aspects of his/her true personality type accurately detected/recorded by the other members of the tribe; the winners in each tribe will go on to play against the winners of the other tribes.  (2) To try out a 'new you.'   "If you act it out long enough, you can make yourself believe it-- and you become that person."

By now, you are all aware of the wave of voyeuristic television, from the current hit, "Survivor," through yawnfests like "Big Brother," to the embarrassing "Who Wants To Marry a Millionaire?"  As participants on/producers of GBC TV's "Psychic Explorer," your adventure will proceed as follows:

1)  Identify one friend in this classroom, the person here whom you trust the most.  This person is your SHADOW.  If your current personal CLIQUE (in your daily life) consists of a group of three, you must select one of your people who must search for an alternative partner, another person in whom they can put their trust.  Notify the Executive when this process is complete.

2) Your chosen pairs will be assigned (through random card distribution) to be a part of the following 4  TRIBES, with approximately five pairs (8-10 players) per tribe:

  • A)           The Gurus

  • B)            The Mystics

  • C)            The Psychics

  • D)            The Shamans

3)    Secretly, outside of  the larger context of your TRIBE, you and your SHADOW will gradually:

(i) review and log the results of the 10 self-diagnostics you have/will administer/ed to yourselves. Please complete all 10 SDs by Feb. 19 (before Intersession Week). These are:

  • 1.1.  Pinpointing my Personality Preferences pp. 6-9   (resulting in a 4-letter Personality type e.g. ENTJ, ENTP, etc.)

  • 2.1   My Communication Style  (identifying communication style preferences you display as a product of your 4-letter personality type)   pp. 56-58

  • 3.1   How Defensive am I?    (analyzing the degree to which use defence mechanisms)   pp. 70-72

  • 4.1   What's my Dominant Ego State?   (analyzing which ego state is likely dominant in your life)  pp. 123-126

  • 5.1   Assessing your Leadership Temperament  pp. 178-181

  • 6.1   What's my Conflict Management Style?  pp. 209-210

  • 7.1   What's my Self-Concept? (Summary SD: 1 through 6)  pp. 244-246

  • 8.1   How Tactile are You? (touch avoidance vs. touch tendency) pp. 309-310

  • 9.1   Internal Control Index (autonomous vs. dependent behaviour)  pp. 324-326

  • 10.1 Stress... Let Me Sum It Up (high stress/low stress)   pp. 376-377

ii) help one another to compile secret, detailed, written true personality profiles  of one another, according to the 10 self-diagnostics above.  Especially use 7.1 for data.

               iii) discuss with your SHADOW...

  • (a)  things, about these personality profiles and the attributes identified therein, of  which you are proud, and...

  •   (b) things that you'd like to change about yourself (e.g.  an introvert may suggest  that she'd like to be more extraverted; a 'visionary' leader may wish that they were better at troubleshooting; a judger may propose that he'd like to be more laid back, to be more of a perceiver, etc.).

iv)   I)  devise, with each other's help, preferred personality profiles of the people whom you would really like to be.  Be imaginative and bold, but be realistic-- the new personality must be a "PERSONA"... (a)   that you really would like to be, and  (b)  that you realistically think you could be, without the appearance of inauthentic or bad acting (you can be humorous, though, if you wish-- see below, 5i). or   (II)  People who, honestly, have few defenses, a dominant adult ego state, strong leadership and communication skills, etc. (according to the self-diagnostic tests) may be MOLES.  Moles are people who will devise and portray an entirely false personality profile for themselves.  A Mole must also design a written version of his/her false 'preferred personality profile,' reporting his/her new attributes. *Remember... you can't just choose to be a Mole....  e.g.... -If you show an extreme imbalance between E and I (e.g. you score 1 for Extraversion and 6 for Introversion; see p. 6), it is likely that, in a social world such as ours, your personality needs some fine-tuning.  Same for extreme extraverts (not enough inner thought).  Extremists are ineligible to be Moles (e.g. same for extreme judgers, perceivers, etc.) -If you have an average score of 3 or more on 3.1 (pp. 70-72), you are ineligible to be a Mole.  -If your egogram shows that your dominant ego state is anything other than an 'A' (p. 126), don't be a Mole.

v) All participants must prepare, in your pairs,  TWO copies each (photocopies) of both your TRUE PERSONALITY PROFILES  TPP and your PREFERRED PERSONALITY PROFILES  PPP (or Mole profiles).  Each written profile will report 10 different pieces of data (see 3.1), in addition to  name and tribe. -Keep one PPP for your notes, and give the other to your tribal SCRIBE (see 5.1) by March 5.  -Put both TPPs in sealed envelopes-- keep one and give the other to the HOST (5.3.c) by Mar. 5.

vi)  Respective members of pairs (shadows) are expected to maintain one another's secret identity together. Later, in tribal process, both will be voted out together when their collective inauthenticity is determined  (see later, 6iii)                                         (CONCLUSION of LEVEL 1)

4)             LEVEL 2  Return to the tribe, where each person will blend into the group of ten, in natural conversation, playing out their new personality profiles (be sure always to include data from the above 8 self-diagnostics).  However, when TRIBAL BUSINESS (see section 5) is conducted, tribal protocol is as follows:

  • (i) only one person may speak at a time-- if you wish, create such an environment using talking-stick rules, e.g. the person holding a 'sacred object' is the speaker at the moment.

  • ii) if anyone in the group says something that seems illogical or convoluted, other group members should analyze logical fallacies committed by that person--(see pp. 99-109,  Falikowski; also found in Burnie, the GNED textbook).

  • iii) the ad hominem fallacy will not be tolerated under any circumstances (see p. 99-100). A member's use of an ad hoiminem fallacy will result in a 5 point loss.

5)             Tribal business includes:

i)          Each team's 2 SCRIBES will keep records of the events of your tribal processes (e.g. what kinds of questions are asked of tribe members, what members' responses are, who is eliminated first, etc.) and keep score.   Each tribe member begins with 25 points.

ii)          INTRODUCTIONS, where tribe members will introduce themselves, according to their preferred personality profiles.  Some of the things you report will be true.  Others will not.  What is true and what isn't will depend, of course, on what is new, or added to your psyche by the preferred personality profile.  All other members should take NOTES when people are giving introductions.

(e.g. Hi!  I'm Reeves, and I'm an extravert.  Hey, how's it goin'?  Yeah, in fact, I'm an ENFP-- an extraverted, intuitive, feeling, perceiving person.  That means I'm perfectly suited to my job, 'cause I love being around people.  I'm just kind of drifting my way through life, like a leaf on a river.  I'm relaxed almost all of the time, not caring about what comes next-- I just accept it.  I'm a born leader-- whenever the chips are down, I naturally just jump into the game-- I live for it.  I breathe spontaneity and danger-- I love racing car driving, bugee-jumping, fencing, and the martial arts.  I heard about a guy in Ungava Bay who rides killer whales, peacefully co-existing with the gentle giants.  I'd love to do that sort of thing, if I could.  I don't think I use a lot of defenses, although I really identify with powerful heroes, like Wayne Gretzsky, Jesse Ventura, The Rock, Tupac, and the X-Men, etc.)

iii)       Immediate nominations and democratic ELECTIONS for...

  • a)             LEADER of your tribe.

  • b)            2 SECRETARY/SCRIBES of your tribe.

  • c)             HOST of the FOX TV show, PSYCHIC EXPLORER, (held MARCH 26 and APRIL 2).

  • d)            PRODUCER/DIRECTOR of your 30 min. segment of the 2-hour show.

iv)   Ongoing question and response sessions/INTERVIEWS with various members of the group, in the attempt to determine, definitively, the precise TPP of each member of the group.  It is known to everyone that one member of a SHADOW PAIR knows the other's profile.  Thus, during interviews, tribe members may ask you, as another person's shadow, questions about your secret partner/your psychic twin.  You are expected to respond in character, supporting your shadow's facade/persona.

6)             -SHOWDOWNS will occur in the week (Mar. 19) prior to the show (Mar. 26, April 2), during which the tribe will exile those with inauthentic PPPs by submitting (to the secretary) SPECULATIVE TPPs for each other group member, and publicly, within the group, stating their assessment of the respective TPPs.
  •   i)  If a tribe member's TPP is guessed, he/she will be exiled from the tribe (e.g. eliminated from the game). Your tribe's objective is to eliminate 4-6 individuals on March 19, leaving the tribe with 4 members.

  • ii)  If you are the one who guesses, item for item, the entire 10-aspect profile of a team-member, you will receive 5 points.  Since your proposed TPP for challenging a fellow tribe member must be written down and submitted to the secretary in advance of your VERBAL CHALLENGE, it is possible for more than one person to receive 5 points.

  • iii)  Obviously, your SHADOW is not eligible to guess your TPP since he/she already knows it.

  •   -POINTS may be useful, in the event of a TIE between surviving tribe members.  In the end, it is possible to win on points.

7)  The  PSYCHIC EXPLORER  SHOW (March 26, April 2) should be a 3 hour presentation (2 hours on March 26 and 1 hour on April 2), during which each tribe will have its segment of approximately 30 minutes to explain their adventures.   On March 26, the game will occupy 2 hours, during which all four tribes will yield 1 winner each.  Please do DRESS REHEARSALS of your segments of the show--less than 30 minutes please--to plan stage-blocking and timing.
  • a) Facilitated by the show's HOST, the tribe's LEADER will explain, in as animated a manner as possible (and with help from team-mates), the tribe's adventure thus far.
  • b) Each individual will speak for approximately 2 minutes about his/her TPP and their PPP, and how they were able to express new aspects of themselves/fool others through their PPPs.

  • c) Final showdowns will take place, during which the remaining 4 members will engage in final VERBAL CHALLENGE with one another, resulting in 1 winner per tribe.   (CONCLUSION OF LEVEL 2)

8) These 4 tribal winners will conduct secret interview sessions with each of their three opponents. These will conclude LIVE, on April 2, during which the four winners will match off in final showdowns.                 (LEVEL 3)
