When you see, on your Topic
Outline, for example, September 8, 10, and 11 listed for Week 1, or September
15, 17, and 18 for Week 2, this is referring to three different sections/classes
of the course, taught at different times. It
does not mean that a Tuesday student (Sept. 8) may attend a Thursday class
(Sept. 10), or vice versa without consulting the
professor.
Readings
The
recommended book for this course is Judith Rolls' Public
Speaking Made Easy
(see Reading List for details). Students
are also expected to refer to the course's website (http://liad.georgebrown.ca/
bigideasinc/) for readings pertaining to subjects covered in class (on the
reading list, these are called OH, or "online handouts").
While
we will not specifically refer, in class, to many ideas addressed by the
readings, students are responsible for demonstrating, through the quality of the
delivery of their speeches, that they have covered the readings and incorporated
the ideas into their performances/ presentations.
Conduct
"Speaking
With Confidence" is a course in which many controversial ideas and social
issues are addressed. Students are
required to be orderly, polite, and attentive to the views of their classmates.
Although
natural "crowd responses" (eg. laughter, etc, when appropriate) are
encouraged, students should not talk when classmates are presenting their
speeches. When the speaker invites
responses, during the question period of his/her presentation, please feel free
to respond.
Do
not enter the room while a speech is being given; this can be very distracting,
both to the speaker and to the audience; wait until there is a break between
speeches.
Students
who violate these two essential rules of conduct will have marks deducted,
without notice given by the professor to the student.
For
additional, important conduct rules, see also Punctuality.
Participation
"Speaking
With Confidence" can be a very enjoyable and worthwhile experience.
The class provides immeasurable rewards in many other aspects of
students' professional and personal lives.
The
most important thing that we ask you to do, though, is to ATTEND, even on days
on which you are not presenting or giving a speech. It is theoretically impossible to participate if you do not
attend. Seeing your classmates in action, giving their speeches, is
an extremely valuable part of this learning experience.
There
are 14 classes (7 before Intersession Week and 7 after IW).
NOTE THAT INTERSESSION WEEK IS CONSIDERED TO BE WEEK 8.
Students will be required to sign in for the class in the first
half hour and to sign out of the class during the
last 15 minutes, at specific times designated by the
professor.
Signing
in and signing out are very important responsibilities.
It is not the professor's responsibility to see that you are there, and
to record your attendance. It is
your responsibility to record your own attendance, when the sheet is passed
around. If you forget to sign
in/sign out, even on a day when you are present, you may be considered to be
absent.
In
the end, your attendance mark out of 14 will be calculated as a mark out of 10.
Students who have missed MORE THAN FOUR classes out of 14 will
relinquish/lose their entire mark for participation.
Thus, a mark of less than 10
out of 14, will be not be considered, and will be deleted from the student's
evaluation.

Presentation
Sign-Ups
It
is important to sign up, for giving your speeches/presentations, at least ONE
WEEK in advance of the date on which you wish to present.
Without having booked an appointment, students may not have the
opportunity to present.
If
a student does not keep his/her appointment for a speech, it must be for a
"medical" reason, and this absence must be substantiated by a doctor's
note, written on a doctor's letterhead. Please do not approach the professor to negotiate a new
appointment for a speech without having such a document in hand.
There
will be no days scheduled for giving speeches other than those listed below:
Tests
Attendance
for Group Impromptu tests (Week 7; Week
15) is mandatory.
It is up to students to take the initiative to form groups for these
presentations (see "Assignments" for details).
It
is imperative that all group members exchange email addresses and phone #s in
order to contact one another-- groups should meet for coffee at least once, to
discuss group dynamics and the actual logistics of how the presentation will be
carried out; furthermore, one "dress rehearsal" of a presentation is
strongly recommended.
If
a particular group member does not attend coffee meetings or dress rehearsals,
group members have the right to exclude him/her from their actual presentations.
If a group member is late or not in attendance for the actual day of the
speech, the group is expected to proceed. It
is up to you to keep track of your group members and to ensure that they will be
present.
