Speaking with Confidence

Benefits of Public Speaking

Personal Benefits

learn to be more sensitive and skilled communicator.
public speaking encourages you to look inside yourself and explore what matters to you.
learn to consider listeners--what do they want, need, like, care about?
learn the power of speech--words have emotional content.
words can hurt, heal, create, build, transform.
learn to focus topics, how to structure, learn to listen, critically evaluate, discriminate types of messages
learn to be active in your learning--speak up and learn.

Practical & Professional Benefits

you can give or get help in class.
oral communications is always one of the top skills demanded by employers--what occupation doesn't need it?
get ahead in your career; be the one at work on whom the boss depends for conveying ideas to users and customers.
learn to speak concisely, clearly, and confidently-- impress your boss...  impress your clients.
these skills will help you speak out in important situations, such as being a parent, citizen, customer, tax payer.
it is the nature of humans to form groups-- this depends on communication skills.

Advocacy

help your family and neighbours.
change the world.
help others who cannot speak effectively for themselves.
learn the ability to persuade others---change things for better; be involved; seek civil justice, human rights, democracy, freedom of speech.
be the next Martin Luther King or Maya Angelou...  change history.

Cultural Benefits

learn to avoid ethnocentrism--one view that is "right" excludes many.
learn to avoid stereotypes.
look at many cultures-- expand your point of view.
learn to know individuals--each human being is a unique expression of many features.
learn more about the groups to whom you belong.

Public Speaking as Expanded Conversation

What are three characteristics of good conversation?

  1. It preserves the natural directness of informal talk.
  2. It's colourful and compelling.
  3. It's tuned to reactions of listeners.

Conversational Directness and Spontaneity

Who are you? ....My name is bla, bla and I was born in bla bla...
What is the problem with the above?
it's dull-- who cares? so what?
How can you make this more colourful?
add anecdote-- a story of interest (remember Reeves' story about the bass player in the band, who turned out to be Reeves himself?)
use humour, drama, or interest... something that all can relate to or be shocked by.
add feeling, colour, and life-- make them remember what you said.
