In order to both address the diversity of learners, and enhance learning beyond retention of content, try to build in a variety of activities which allow for reflection, group interaction, and experience.

If you would like to try something new, but feel uncertain, how about discussing your idea with a colleague? Sometimes if you share with students that you are taking a risk in asking them to engage in a particular activity, students will respect that, and become more willing to engage in risk-taking themselves.
