Module 2: Creating a Positive Learning Environment

Introduction

Last week we considered how to foster active learning, as well as how to use teaching methods related to working in small groups.

This week we will continue our examination of various teaching methods while maintaining the theme of creating a positive learning environment.

Learning Activities

This week you will need to:

1. Read on-line course notes related to the following:
Lecture
Case Study
Presentation Skills

2. Read
Chapter 13 "Delivering a Lecture" pp.111-119
Chapter 14 "Explaining Clearly" pp.120-124
Chapter 15 "Personalizing the Large Lecture Class" pp.125-130.
in Tools for Teaching, Barbara Gross Davis.
Don't be alarmed - these are short chapters.

3. This activity involves using listservs as sources of learning on the Internet. A listserv is a discussion group related to a particular topic. It is similar to a magazine subscription in that you subscribe to it, and the messages posted are delivered to your e-mail address.

Visit the site Reasons to Use Discussion Lists for Professional Development by Nadine Burke. Listservs can provide very helpful information for adult educators. I particularly like the listserv called DEOS. I have learned a great deal just from the posting of URL's to this site. If you join this one, you will be inundated with email, but you can just delete those postings that are not of interest to you. Look here for more information about listservs.

Select one of the listservs that seems interesting to you, and subscribe to it for at least two weeks.
Evaluate the discussion in terms of how well it addressed your learning needs.
Did you find it useful as an information source?
What was the tone of the exchanges like? Would you feel comfortable participating or did you participate in the discussion on this listserv?
Would you recommend this listserv to the group?

I will ask you to respond to these questions in week 9

Conference Discussion Topics

1. Read this Case Study and present your ideas to the conference under the heading "Case Study." Reply to at least one other idea presented.
